How we picked

We compared what consistent espresso reviewers and enthusiast forums recommend, the accessories’ specs and long-term owner feedback, then picked one accessory per category. We leaned toward tools that solve a real problem in the cup and left out gadgets that mostly look good on the counter.

Which one should you buy

What to look for in espresso accessories

Check your portafilter size first

Most tools are sized to your portafilter. Commercial-style machines like the Gaggia Classic use 58mm. Breville machines use 54mm. Tampers are usually sold a little larger than the nominal size, so a 58.5mm tamper fits a 58mm basket snugly. Before you buy a tamper, dosing funnel, puck screen or portafilter, check the diameter in your machine’s manual. If you are still choosing a machine, our espresso machine guide lists the size for each pick. Normcore makes most of the tools here in both 54mm and 58mm versions.

Espresso scale with timer

Espresso is a ratio. You weigh the dry coffee going in and the liquid coming out, and time the shot. A scale for espresso should read to 0.1 gram, respond quickly and fit on your drip tray. An auto timer that starts with the first drops saves you juggling a phone. See our coffee scale guide for more options.

Tamper

A good tamper fits the basket closely and lets you press level. Spring or calibrated tampers like the Normcore apply the same pressure every time, which takes one variable out of dialing in. The plastic tampers that come with many machines are too small and too light to do this well.

WDT tool

WDT stands for Weiss distribution technique. You stir the grounds in the basket with thin needles to break up clumps and even out the bed before tamping. It is one of the cheapest ways to reduce channeling, especially with grinders that clump. Look for needles around 0.25mm or finer.

Dosing cup or funnel

A funnel sits on top of the basket so grounds do not spill while you grind or stir. A dosing cup goes under the grinder and lets you weigh the dose before you pour it into the basket. Either one keeps the counter clean. A funnel is the better pair for a WDT tool.

Bottomless portafilter

A bottomless, or naked, portafilter has no spouts and no bottom to the basket holder, so you see the coffee leave the basket. Even flow means good puck prep. Spurts and thin streams show channeling. Bottomless portafilters are machine specific. Check the brand, the group size and the lug design. The Normcore pick fits 54mm Breville machines such as the Barista Express and Bambino line. For a 58mm machine, buy a portafilter made for that model.

Milk pitcher

For one or two milk drinks, a 12 oz pitcher is the easiest size to steam and pour from. A sharp, defined spout makes latte art much easier. Heavy stainless steel holds temperature steadily so you can feel when the milk is ready.

Knock box

A knock box gives spent pucks a place to go. Look for a solid rubber bar that will not dent your portafilter and a bin that comes out for washing. A compact box suits a home counter.

Puck screen

A puck screen is a thin metal disc that sits on top of the coffee. It keeps the shower screen cleaner and can help water spread evenly. It is a nice extra rather than a must, and it takes up headspace in the basket, so you may need to drop your dose slightly. The Normcore 58.5mm puck screen is a common choice for 58mm baskets.

Frequently asked questions

Which accessory should I buy first?

A scale. Weighing your dose and your shot makes every other change measurable. After that, a better grinder makes the biggest difference. See our espresso grinder guide.

Will these tools fit my Breville?

Breville home machines use a 54mm portafilter. The bottomless portafilter here is made for them. The tamper, funnel and puck screen listed are 58mm sizes, so buy the 54mm versions of those tools instead.

Do I need a WDT tool if I have a good grinder?

It helps less, but most people still see more even shots. It costs little and takes a few seconds per shot.

Does a bottomless portafilter make better coffee?

Not by itself. It shows you how well you prepared the puck, which helps you fix problems faster. Many people also like that it is easier to clean.
